Through the original doorway.
Mini cranes in historic and government buildings.

Jekko mini crane set up inside a historic building interior during renovation

A courthouse from 1890 and a federal office block from 1965 have the same problem when something heavy has to move inside them: nobody planned for a crane. The doorways are original, the floors are protected or unknown, exhaust is not allowed, and the approval to bring a machine in runs through a facilities office that wants numbers before it wants a truck. This is the work battery-electric Jekko mini cranes were built for, and it is a large share of what CLE puts on the road every month.

01The building was not designed for a crane

Historic renovations depend on access. Widening an opening in a landmarked building can require design review, permits and restoration, so the machine has to fit the building as it stands. The SPX328EVO and SPX532.2 are compact candidates, but every door, ramp and turn must be measured. Their booms and approved attachments can serve lobbies, stair openings and rooms that an outside crane cannot approach directly.

That is the trade a mini crane makes: it gives up the big-crane numbers in exchange for going in through the front door. On a historic building, that trade almost always wins.

02The floor is the first load chart

Old structure, unknown numbers

A wood-joist floor, a terrazzo lobby over a vaulted basement or a marble landing needs a structural review for the proposed equipment. Compare the SPX328EVO and SPX532.2 using the actual configured machine weight and manufacturer outrigger reactions. Low total weight alone does not establish that a floor can take a concentrated pad load.

Protect the route, not just the setup

Between the door and the pick, the crane travels on rubber tracks over finished floors that cannot be scuffed. We run ground protection mats along the route and outrigger pads under every jack, and we size both from the reaction numbers rather than guessing. The building's engineer gets a pad load, a contact area, and a ground pressure they can compare against the slab or the joists.

Bring the reactions to the meeting. Reviewers on historic and government work routinely ask for outrigger loads before they will approve the machine. CLE's Outrigger Reaction Simulator produces per-pad loads and ground pressure for every Jekko in the fleet, so the number is on the table at the first walk-through instead of the third.

03No exhaust, no noise, no fuel inside

Occupied government buildings may remain in use during a lift. Courtrooms and offices can be nearby, with shared air handling. Battery operation avoids engine exhaust at the machine and can reduce noise, but the facility must approve the work area, air controls and operating schedule. Confirm the charger supply for the specific machine before delivery.

  • No engine exhaust at the point of work; facility ventilation and air-monitoring requirements still apply
  • Approved electrical supply for the configured charger, with charging arrangements agreed before delivery
  • Low noise so occupied floors keep working while the lift happens
  • Radio remote operation, so the operator stands where the load and the finishes are visible

04Government work is paperwork first

Federal, state and municipal facilities depend on documentation. Before delivery, the reviewer may need the load chart for the exact configuration, outrigger reactions, machine weight and dimensions, operator qualifications and a lift plan identifying the pick, radius and set. Confirm the required documents and their revisions early so missing information does not delay the job.

Government procurement and operator requirements should be confirmed with the agency and employer for the actual job. A machine's stated rating is not a blanket licensing exemption. The derated Jekko mini cranes post explains the distinction; employer training duties and local requirements still apply.

05What actually gets lifted

  • Mechanical: air handlers, chillers, and boiler sections through the original mechanical-room door
  • Electrical: switchgear, transformers, and UPS cabinets into basements and vaults
  • Stone and masonry: cornice pieces, column capitals, and replacement blocks set from inside scaffolding
  • Glass: monumental windows and skylight panels lifted from the interior with a vacuum manipulator
  • Art and fixtures: chandeliers, statuary, and archival cabinets that cannot be tilted or dragged
  • Structural: steel headers and beams threaded into existing framing during seismic or accessibility upgrades

06Three machines we start with

The SPX328EVO and SPX532.2 each carry a 5,950 lb headline capacity in the referenced technical data. Their working envelopes and setup requirements differ, so compare the exact chart and site geometry. The SPX650 provides an 11,020 lb headline capacity for heavier work, still with battery operation in the CL-2 configuration. These are maximum ratings, not capacities at every reach or guarantees of floor suitability.

07When a mini crane is the right call

  • The load has to enter through an original doorway or corridor that cannot be widened
  • Floors are protected, suspended, or of unknown capacity
  • The building stays occupied during the work
  • Indoor air rules prohibit engine exhaust
  • The approving office needs outrigger reactions and a load chart up front
  • A truck crane outside would require a street closure, a roof opening, or a permit the schedule cannot absorb

Compact Lifting Equipment rents and sells battery-electric Jekko mini cranes from Pottstown, PA, and delivers across Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic, including Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Send us the door dimensions, the load, and the floor, and we will put together the machine and the paperwork.
